How to ship ammunition
Ammunition never goes by mail. It ships by UPS or FedEx Ground as a Limited Quantity, and some states only allow it to a dealer or a permit holder.
Who can take it
Private seller → buyer in another state
- USPS: No
- UPS: Yes: Ground · adult signature · Limited Quantity mark
- FedEx: With its own agreement: Ground · adult signature · Limited Quantity mark
Best way: UPS Ground. Ammo can't go by USPS; UPS Ground takes it as a Limited Quantity.
Private seller → licensed dealer (FFL)
- USPS: No
- UPS: Yes: Ground · adult signature · Limited Quantity mark
- FedEx: With its own agreement: Ground · adult signature · Limited Quantity mark
Best way: UPS Ground. Ammo can't go by USPS; UPS Ground takes it as a Limited Quantity.
Dealer with carrier agreements → dealer

Before you ship
- I'm telling the carrier in writing that this package holds ammunition.
- Cartridges are in inner boxes inside a strong outer box, under 66 lb, with the Limited Quantity mark on the outside, and no gun in the box.
- Drop it at a UPS Customer Center or schedule a pickup. UPS Stores and FedEx Office don't take ammo.
State rules and good to know
- Ammo to California or New York has to ship to a licensed dealer or ammo vendor, not to a home. (CA, NY)
- This state requires the buyer to hold a permit (FOID, FID/LTC, FPIC or similar) for ammo. Confirm you've seen it, or ship to a dealer. (IL, MA, NJ, CT, RI)
- Ammo can't ship into Washington, DC. (DC)
- Buyers must be 21+ for handgun ammo and 18+ for rifle ammo. Adult signature is on.
